Grindelwald, a small village in the Bernese Alps

Very close to Interlaken is Grindelwald. A small alpine village very touristy and very famous for its ski slopes in winter and its many hiking trails in summer. It is the starting point for many cable cars and funiculars that take you to one of the highest mountains in the region.

Interlaken to Grindelwald

This winter sports resort, situated 30 minutes from Interlaken (20 km) is the ideal starting point for hikes, and glacier access, and is one of the access points to visit the famous Jungfrau, which is why this station is very popular with tourists. Needless to say, the panorama is grandiose no matter where we are.

How to get from Interlaken to Grindelwald?

From Interlaken, you can easily access Grindelwald by car or by train. It takes about 30 minutes. It is really popular to take the easy train ride to get there so you don't have to worry about parking

You can buy your train tickets at the automated ticket kiosks or at the ticket offices at the train station.
The price for a ticket from Interlaken to Grindelwald costs around 12-14 CHF one way per person depending on the time of year. Notice that with a Eurail Pass, you will get 25% off.

Make sure to open your eyes wide because the view from the train station is already incredible! You will be immediately greeted with huge mountains and rolling hills. When you get off the train, don't forget to turn around and look back behind you!

What to do in Grindelwald

The village of Grindelwald is quite large and made up of small chalets spread over the meadows: adorable! The restaurants, bars, shops... are mainly grouped in the main street Dorfstrasse, quite lively, starting from the station and going up towards the Reformed Church "Reformierte Kirche" passing by the tourist office.

During the winter months, Grindelwald teems with ski enthusiasts. Just take a look at a map of Grindelwald to discover the wide offer of ski slopes. This ski resort is attracting more and more skiers from the country.

In summer, visitors enjoy outdoor activities and incredible views.

1. Grindelwald Canyon

grindelwald glacier gorgeGlacier Canyon is a beautiful 1 km walkway through 300-meter-high cliffs. There's a trampoline in the middle of the gorge called the spider web. This masterpiece of nature was formed by the lower Grindelwald glacier, which over time carved its way through the rock in this area. Unfortunately, the lower glacier no longer exists, but the canyon itself is now thriving as a popular destination for a unique sensory walk through its exposed rock galleries and tunnels.

How to get there: The Glacier Canyon is a 35-minute walk away from the center of the village. you can also catch the bus at the train station in Grindelwald (line 2).

2. Canyon Swing

3. Indoor rope park

Visit the largest Indoor Ropes Park in Europe

Under the roof of the ice hall, both young and old can balance, climb, or fly across the sometimes rather wobbly and challenging courses. Use of the Indoor Ropes Park requires no particular level of fitness. All users of the Indoor Ropes Park will be supplied with the necessary equipment and instructed by the staff.

4. Jungfraujoch

The excursion to the Jungfraujoch is one of the best. It is also one of the main reasons tourists visit Grindelwald. This incredible journey to the top of the Jungfraujoch at 3,454 meters is one of Switzerland's most popular day trips.

Known as Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, the mountain peak can be reached by train from Grindelwald in around 90 minutes or by cable car to the Eiger station with a connection to the Jungfraujoch in about 30 minutes.

There are plenty of things to do at the top, including the Ice Palace, the Sphinx Observatory which offers stunning views of the Aletsch Glacier, shops and restaurants, and various activities in the summer.

5. Grindelwald - First

Grindelwald First is one of the best places in Switzerland for Adventure travel. With beautiful hikes, thrilling adventures like the First Flyer and Trotti bikes, Grindelwald First Cliff Walk, and gorgeous views from Bachalpsee Lake. To start your journey you need to take a cable car up to"Grindelwald First". The ride takes 25 minutes and tickets cost 60 CHF for a return trip.

5.1 First Cliff Walk by Tissot

first cliff walk grindelwaldDiscover First Cliff Walk by Tissot, a narrow metal footbridge installed on the side of the wall, thus dominating the entire bottom of the valley. On arrival, a very aerial platform – 45m of emptiness underfoot, better not be subject to vertigo! – allow you to still see the Eiger, between two gaps of clouds… Sumptuous!

5.2 Bachalpsee Lake

A lot of different hikes are starting from Grindelwald but here is the most famous one: Hiking to Bachalpsee. It is a fascinating journey to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Europe.

There are two lakes, a small and a large one. But it doesn't matter because the place is so pleasant, relaxing, and quiet. No matter which way you look, the panorama is superb. It is a real treat to sit on the grass and enjoy the present moment.

After you hike, you have a choice of ways to get back down to Grindelwald. First the classic way, by gondola or by zip line, kart, and scooter. In conclusion, end this day of hiking in a fun and adventurous way.

5.3 First Glider

Grindelwald is also home to the famous 'First Glider'. Named for its connection to the First Mountain, the attraction features four lines of side-by-side ziplines that allow four people to shoot down simultaneously.
At a top speed of 84 km per hour,  the views are even more rewarding than the adrenaline rush.
