The “Zibelemärit” (Onion Market) is a traditional folk festival held in Bern. Farmers from all over the area bring over 50 tons of onions and garlic artistically woven into braids. Some of them also make funny face sculptures with onions. Beautiful market stalls offer ceramic pots, vegetables, traditional market goodies, mementos & delicious Glühwein (mulled wine).
The bustle gets started at 5:00 a.m. as tons of visitors from Switzerland and abroad arrive in the city. This is the day to try savory cheese tarts, onion tarts, and onion soup. Children scatter confetti in the streets and have fun at the fairground.
