DISCOVER OESCHINENSEE

Oeschinensee Lake is easily one of the most scenic lakes around Interlaken. Set at 1,578 meters above sea level, this alpine lake is surrounded by towering mountains that stay snow-capped year-round, creating lovely small waterfalls as the snow melts in the warmer months.

A day trip to Oeschinensee is ideal, not just for its proximity to Interlaken but for the variety of activités you can enjoy. Grab a bite at one of the lakeside restaurants, fire up one of the BBQs with stunning lake views, or, if you’re feeling brave, take a swim in the summer, the water stays refreshingly cold all year around. You can also rent a rowboat to explore the lake up close or take a scenic hike around the lake to enjoy panoramic views. During the peak of winter, it’s a fantastic place to lace up your skates and glide across the frozen lake.

HOW TO GET TO OESCHINENSEE

1. Train to Kandersteg
To start your journey, head to Kandersteg by train from Interlaken West or Interlaken Ost. You’ll need to change at Spiez. Tickets typically cost between 20-30 CHF each way. For up-to-date information, schedules, and tickets, check the SBB App.
2. Cable Car Option
If hiking isn’t your thing, take the bus from Kandersteg station to the cable car, which brings you directly up to the lake for around 32 CHF round-trip (prices vary seasonally).

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

Hike to Oeschinensee from Kandersteg
For those who love a bit of adventure, the hike from Kandersteg to the lake takes about 1.5 hours over 4 km. It’s a short hike, but don’t underestimate it! The steep parts pack a punch. It can get busy in summer, but the wide path makes it easy to navigate. (Check out the trail here)

Lake Loop Hike for Incredible Views
Once you arrive, take a breather and go for the loop hike around the lake for the best views. The loop is about 9 km with a 500 m elevation gain and takes around 3 hours to complete. Not up for the full loop? You can hike halfway to get an equally rewarding view from the opposite shore. (Check out the trail here)

Rowing Boat Rental
Get up close to the lake’s small waterfalls or enjoy a relaxing paddle. Boats are available for rent, accommodating up to 4 people for 32 CHF per hour. (Check the Oeschinensee website for current rates.)

Picnic by the Lake
Nothing beats a picnic with the lake as your backdrop. Set up at one of the unique hanging BBQ spots. If you didn’t pack food in Interlaken, don’t worry! Stop by the Coop or Volg in Kandersteg on your way up for supplies.

Swimming
The water in alpine lakes stays cool even in summer, but if you’re up for a refreshing dip, Oeschinensee is the place. The lake has plenty of spots to lay out a towel, soak in some sun, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
