Europe’s Famous Hostels is an association of individually owned, independent hostels. We only accept the best hostels in Europe. The association was founded in 1995 when it was made up of just 5 members. As of 2016 we have grown to include 50 Hostels, both in Europe and beyond.

Europe’s Famous Hostels’ purpose is to provide a recognisable stamp of quality in the Hostelling business. Our name comes as a guarantee that our customers will have a great stay at the best value; choosing a Europe’s Famous Hostel is choosing quality and great customer service.

Each city has only one Famous Hostel and staying at a Europe’s Famous Hostel guarantees you’ll have a great stay at unbeatable value. Where a Europe’s Famous Hostel has not yet been selected, we strive to provide travellers with the best option that each of the 200 most-searched for cities have to offer. Thanks to our years of experience at the very top of the hostelling business, we can guarantee that any hostel suggested by us will be the best that city has to offer.

Sneak Peek
There’s a certain kind of magic at Oeschinensee this time of year. It’s quiet, a bit brooding, and utterly incredible. 🏔️❄️

While the summer crowds are still months away, the lake feels like a well-kept secret. Watching the turquoise water begin to break through the winter ice is a proper sight to behold. It’s raw, it’s wild, and it’s exactly why we love Interlaken.

Fancy a misty trek to see it for yourself? Grab a mate from the common room and head up before the clouds roll in.

This town in Switzerland has 72 waterfalls🤯

Welcome to Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland 🇨🇭
A village of about 2,500 people sitting at the bottom of one of the most dramatic valleys in the Alps. Sheer 300-meter cliffs on both sides, 72 waterfalls, and a backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. It’s genuinely one of most memorable places I’ve been too🙌

🚆 Getting there
Train is the best way to reach Lauterbrunnen. Switzerland’s rail network connects directly to the village, and the Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, buses, and cable cars in the area

🥾 What to do
Hike the Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg ridge for straight-on views of the Eiger north face. Take the cogwheel train up to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454m. Walk to Trümmelbach Falls, a series of glacial waterfalls carved inside the mountain itself. And walk through the valley. The waterfalls spill off the cliffs above you at almost every turn

📅 Best time
May through October. The falls are fullest in late spring (June) when snowmelt is heavy

@whereisjanee_ just casually rode a train that looks like it’s climbing straight into a dream 😭🚂 Tag someone you’d take this unreal mountain ride with!

📌 What to know before you go:
• The Brienz Rothorn Railway is Switzerland’s only daily steam-powered cogwheel railway still running in regular service
• The ride takes about 1 hour from the lakeside village of Brienz up to the 2,350 m summit of Rothorn
• Sit on the right side when going up for the best views of turquoise Lake Brienz and the Bernese Alps
• Summer to early autumn (usually June–October) is the operating season, since snow closes the line in winter

Hidden inside the mountains above Lake Thun lies one of the most incredible cave systems in Switzerland.

The St. Beatus Caves near Interlaken stretch deep inside the mountain with underground rivers, waterfalls, and ancient rock formations.

A place that truly feels unreal.

The colour of the Aare River never quite looks real.

Flowing through Interlaken with that unmistakable turquoise, it’s the kind of place you end up wandering past without much of a plan, just following the water, the mountains in the background, and the occasional stop to take it all in.

One of those quiet little spots that reminds you why travelling in Switzerland is rather special.

Good people. Good stories.

At Balmers Hostel, the mountains might bring you here, but the atmosphere tends to make you stay.

Evenings in the garden, a pint or two at the bar, travellers swapping stories from the day’s adventures. Someone starts a game of foosball, someone else suggests a movie, and before you know it, the whole place feels like a very international living room.

Comfortable, lively, and just the right amount of chaos.

Book a bed. The rest tends to happen naturally.

One of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland in winter 🇨🇭

📍 Oeschinen Lake, Bernese Oberland

A winter hike that feels straight out of a postcard.

🥾 Kandersteg → Oeschinensee
• 9 km round trip
• 500 m elevation gain
• Snowshoes or crampons, depending on snow and ice conditions

In winter, the famous panoramic trail is closed

Fun fact about **Balmers Hostel**:

It all started back in **1907**, when Frida and Adolf Balmer opened a small *Touristenheim* for travellers. By the 1950s, they were already hosting British school groups, so you could say the hostel spirit here has been going strong for quite some time.

In the 70s, the second generation expanded it from a modest 50 beds to one of the most iconic hostels in Switzerland.

Today, the third generation is still running the show.

So yes… when you stay at Balmers, you’re not just booking a bed, you’re joining over a century of travellers passing through Interlaken.

We’ve seen the debates. 🫕
Now tell us: What are the proper consequences when someone loses their bread in the fondue?

And no, “running around the table” or “paying a round” won’t cut it - we’re talking high-stakes fondue justice. 😉

Ever heard of the „Blue Mind Effect“? 🌊❄️

Science shows that being near water lowers stress hormones and slows down our thoughts. In the winter, this effect is supercharged. The silence of Lake Brienz, the crisp alpine air, and the rhythmic stroke of your paddle create the ultimate mental reset.

No summer winds, no crowds—just you and the mirror-like reflections of the Swiss Alps. It’s more than an adventure; it’s moving meditation.

My favourite trip to date! 🇨🇭 The trip I dreamed about for years, and I finally made it happen, all on my own. ✈️

Traveling solo was something I never thought I’d have the courage to do. As someone who’s always surrounded by people, stepping out of my comfort zone felt terrifying… but it was exactly what I needed. I wanted to challenge myself, to grow, to prove that I could do things for myself and by myself.

The first few days were scary, getting lost, taking the wrong train, figuring things out in a new country with a new language, but honestly, that’s what made it so beautiful. The mistakes, the laughter, the little moments of “wow, I did that.”

I was lucky enough to see a close friend in Germany and then set off on my own. It felt like me vs. the world… but the world showed up for me in the best way possible. I met the most amazing people in Balmoral, Interlaken, all solo travelers who became lifelong friends. We extended our stays, shared stories, and created memories I’ll never forget. 💫

This trip was more than travel; it was a journey toward independence, confidence, and connection. To anyone reading this: leap. Do the thing that scares you. Don’t let fear, comfort, or opinions hold you back. The world is waiting, and it’s so worth it. 🌍✨

Cheers to the memories, the people, and to always saying yes to the adventure. 🥂💛
